Birdhouse Farmers Market is committed to helping local farmers and food providers connect directly to their local customers. Equally, we are dedicated to providing access to fresh, locally grown and/or produced foods to Richmond families, to educate them about nutrition, and to foster a sense of community among people from diverse backgrounds.
Birdhouse Farmers Market is a friendly, open-air, all-weather, mid-week, food-focused farmers market promoting healthy eating and a love of community and the environment. Born as a project of the William Byrd Community House in 2007 and based in the Oregon Hill neighborhood, the Byrd House Market sought to bring fresh, locally produced foods to central Richmond food deserts. It was the second market to open in Richmond, after the 17th Street Market and the only one to stay located in the urban center.
When the WBCH closed its doors in the Fall of 2015, after 93 years as a social services organization, the farmers market had to reorganize itself into a viable independent market with a governing board, a fiscal non-profit sponsor (Enrichmond Foundation), and new name: Birdhouse Farmers Market.
In 2016 Birdhouse Famers Market moved a few blocks west, to the Randolph / West End neighborhood in cooperation with the Randolph Community Center, and historic Second Baptist Church. Our goal was to remain close to the original neighborhood ensuring we continued to serve our long-term customer base; while finding a more ideal spot for community gathering, parking, and transportation. 2019 marks our 13th season, with attendance over the last 3 years averaging 400 persons per market day, 12,000 per season. Our customers are local young families with small children, professionals who make their own schedules, employees from area companies, VCU students and professors, and loyal longtime shoppers and friends. We are frequented by area chefs and those seeking high-end organic produce, as well as those seeking more affordable everyday fare. We are considered a family-friendly market and have weekly activities for children of all ages. The market is proud to offer a matching dollar program for SNAP/EBT users. Please come join us any or every Tuesday from May through November.
